Extract Citations
Now that midpage is aware of the underlying facts, arguments, concepts, and motion at issue, we want to add all the cited cases to our notebook so we can analyze them in bulk. To do this, navigate to your notebook, and click on the big "Add Cases" button. Upload the same brief, and all the citations will be extracted. Click "Add to Notebook."
Adding Columns & Putting it All Together
Once you have uploaded all the cases to your Notebook, you can add columns to dissect each case. Want to know the procedural posture and outcome of each case? Select the "Outcome" column. Want to find out which cases actually are favorable to your position (i.e., come out "your way")? Click "Favorability." Want a factual comparison between your case (as outlined in the brief) and every case cited in the brief? Click "Compare Facts".
Watch the video for a walk through.
Start By Extracting Key Facts
The first thing to do is give the AI context about the brief we are dissecting. To do that, open a new project, click "Facts & Uploads," and then upload opposing counsel's brief as a PDF. AI will auto-extract the key facts, arguments, and concepts. Finally, write in the motion type and your desired outcome. Now this "context" is saved to your project. All of this context is saved automatically.
Picking Apart Opposing Counsel's Brief
With our new Bulk-add Citations to Notebook feature, you can easily upload every citation in a given document to your notebook, then ask questions across every case.
This is perfect for quickly analyzing all the cases that are cited in a brief filed by opposing counsel. For all of the cases they rely on, you're thinking: How can I distinguish this case? How can I spin it to my advantage? How can I counter this proposition? Etc.
This arduous process becomes much easier in midpage. Let's take a look.
